A brahmin, probably of Pātaliputta. On coming to visit Benares, he saw Udena there in Khemiyambavana and had a conversation with him, recorded in the Ghotamukha Sutta. At the conclusion of the talk he declared himself converted and wished to offer to Udena the daily allowance of five hundred kahāpanas which he regularly received from the king of Anga. Udena suggested that the money might be utilised to build an assembly-hall for the Order at Pātaliputta. The suggestion was agreed to and the assembly-hall, when built, was called Ghotamukhī (M.ii.157ff).

The Commentary (MA.ii.786f) adds that Ghotamukha held the view that one should seek self-glorification, even by the slaughter of one's parents, and that he was the only person born in heaven, in spite of having held that view. After his birth in heaven, having discovered the cause of his good fortune, be came to earth in disguise and, after revealing his identity to his only remaining sister, told her where his treasures were hidden and instructed her to spend some of the money on renovating an old refectory which the monks were trying to restore.

NỘI DUNG KINH GHOTAMUKHA

1. Bà-la-môn Ghotamukha ở Bàranàsì (Ba-la-nại) đến hỏi tôn giả Udena về ý nghĩa xuất gia đúng pháp, mà Bà-la-môn nghi ngờ các vị xuất gia trước mắt.

Tôn giả giới thiệu có bốn hạng người ở đời (như đã được đề cập):

1.1. Tự hành khổ mình.
1.2. Hành khổ người.
1.3. Tự hành khổ mình và hành khổ người.
1.4. Không hành khổ mình và không hành khổ người.

Chỉ có hạng người thứ tư là từ bỏ thế tục, từ bỏ danh lợi và dục vọng, xuất gia hành phạm hạnh.

2. Tôn giả chỉ rõ, cụ thể bốn hạng người trên trong xã hội (như đã được giới thiệu)

3. Ghotamukha là Bà-la-môn rất giàu có, ngưỡng mộ tôn giả Udena xin quy y với tôn giả và dâng cúng hằng ngày cho tôn giả số tiền 500 đồng tiền vàng mà vua xứ Anga ban mỗi ngày cho Ghotamukha. Tôn giả bảo Ghotamukha đến cầu xin quy y Thế Tôn và xây dựng tịnh xá cho chư Tăng ở Pataliputta. Tôn giả Udena xuất gia nên không cất giữ vàng, bạc, tiền của.
